I met Johnny a few times after I moved to the marina..of course by then he was living in the house he built above red hook. Great guy. He really opened the east end of st thomas to tourism. When he started, red hook was known as "Shark Bay". He changed it so it wouldn't scare off the tourists..I loved to sit at the "Liars Long Table" and have breakfast with all the old timers at the restaurant in the marina..
I lived above the Harms Marina in 1973-4. Johnny was famous for being on American Sportsman (I believe) fishing for marlin. I was 21 at the time. Then, there was his son Butch and his gal Josette. They were all so kind to me. I can't remember yesterday, but these memories are like a lost love. ChrisP. I hope to connect with some old friends from this and further posts I wish to make.
My girlfriend and I lived at Johnny Harms Marina on a boat called Primadonna. This was 1978-79. The captain was Bruce? and he lived with his girlfriend Gail? Debbie and I were terrible crew...we had no clue what we were doing, but at age 23, we had the time of our life! Hung out at the Slip Away and I believe Sandy was the bartender? I would love to know what happened to all of our friends from Red Hook. I remember Red Bailey, Johny Harms son and Al Day from the water taxi.
Thank you for this opportunity. Johnny was my Mentor in the early 1970's. He had a great run and blessed the lives of many. Seldom a day goes by I don't think of Johnny refilling his beloved ice machines! He deserves several chapters in the, "Old Man and the Sea" (inside joke to those of us whom remain in touch).
Cindy - I am going to guess that the captain of Prima donna was Bruce Hodesson. Bruce and I were roommates in 1973 living on the hill over looking the marina. I am mot in touch with Bruce but I believe he lives in Ashland, OR today.
WOW. What memories. My writing this comment comes in a very circuitous way. I "think" one of my favorite sandwiches was inspired by Johnny. I "sort of" remember eating it at the marina. Someone said it was something Johnny ate every day. Liversausage and onion on Pumpernickel with mayo. Am I dreaming or could this have been true? If Butch is still out there somewhere he would know for sure. Can someone get this to him? I would love to connect. Gale Carlson.
Chris Perez, are you there? Bruce Hodesson here. I was the capt of white wine in 75-80. In 72-3 I was working for Hans Lubbe at the dive shop. living on the hill above red hook with you and Mary Laura miller. those were the days my friend! email bchbs@aol.com

Does anyone remember the parrot in the store? I was a teen from 73-79. Some of my best times were at Red Hook and fishing the drop.
Chris Perez,
