St Thomas-St John * Remembering All Ah We *: Jack Kappelman

Founded Rotary East in the early 70's, was its President for the first two years, and was an active member for 30 years. Owner and proprietor of 'Slip Away' in Red Hook in the 80's. Also known as 'Java Jack' when he operated a wholesale coffee and spice distribution business. Was the first property manager at Cowpet Bay East. Jack passed away in June 2002, survived by his wife Vicki and other family members and relatives.

Recalling the many people in the 70's and 80's, up to the mid - 90's who gave Red Hook and The East End the character it had (including some from downtown and St. John).

Why "mid-90's" ? Hurricane Marilyn in 1995 changed our work and play patterns, our lives and energies. As one person expressed it, Hurricane Hugo in '89 was an adventure; Marilyn was a royal P-I-T-A.

Some long time island residents left after '95, plus rebuilding and development, forever changed the simplicity and laid back character of Red Hook we reveled and thrived in.

Many though are still sailin', lymin', workin', drinkin' and dancing on as we speak . . . in St Thomas-St John-BVI's, down island or wherever they may be.
